Taiwan Covid Cases Hit ’22 Daily High, May Nearly Double By End Of April

Taiwan, home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, reported 521 domestically transmitted cases of Covid on Monday, the highest daily total this year.

The daily number of domestic Covid-19 infections is almost certain to reach 1,000 by the end of April, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung said on a radio program on Tuesday, according to a report by the Central News Agency.

Taipei – Taiwan’s business and government hub, New Taipei, Keelung, and Taoyuan are considered high risk, as the group is reporting more domestic cases with unknown sources of infection, Chen said, according to CNA.

“It is unnecessary to panic, but it is necessary for everyone to take action” by following disease prevention measures, he was reported to have said.

Taiwan has a population of more than 23 million, is home to the world’s 22nd largest economy, and is a leading source of the world’s semiconductors. Taiwan businesses that rank on the Forbes Global 2000list of the world’s top publicly traded companies include Hon Hai Precision — the big supplier to Apple led by billionaire Terry Gou, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., or TSMC, which makes computer chips for Intel. Others among Taiwan’s numerous Apple suppliers include Pegatron, Lite-On Technology, Inventec, Catcher Technology, Largan Precision and Compeq Manufacturing.

Fallout from the lockdowns in the Shanghai area has been impacting Taiwan business there, CNA reported on Monday. Some 161 Taiwan companies in Shanghai and nearby manufacturing hub Kunshan have halted production, the agency said. (See details here.)
